Key Enrollment Deadlines You Can't Miss

ACA Open Enrollment

Medicare Enrollment Periods

  • Initial Enrollment Period (IEP) — A 7-month window around your 65th birthday (3 months before, your birthday month, and 3 months after). This is your first chance to enroll in Medicare Parts A, B, and D.
  • Annual Enrollment Period (AEP) — October 15 – December 7. Review and change your Medicare Advantage or Part D plan for the following year.

  • Part B penalty: Your premium increases by 10% for each full 12-month period you were eligible but didn't enroll. This penalty lasts for as long as you have Part B.
  • Part D penalty: If you go 63+ days without creditable prescription drug coverage, you'll pay an extra 1% of the national base premium for each month you delayed. This is added to your premium permanently.

Example: If you delay Part B enrollment by 2 years, your premium increases by 20% — for life.

Special Enrollment Periods — You May Qualify

Certain life events open a Special Enrollment Period, allowing you to enroll outside the normal windows:

  • Lost employer coverage — job loss, reduction in hours, or employer dropping coverage

Common Questions

Can I get health insurance outside of open enrollment?

Only if you have a qualifying life event (job loss, marriage, baby, move, etc.) that triggers a Special Enrollment Period. Otherwise, you'll need to wait for the next open enrollment window.

Do small businesses have to offer health insurance?

What happens if I miss my Medicare Initial Enrollment Period?
